  • Does Acupuncture hurt?

No.  Generally most people don't feel the needles going in.  Acupuncture should elicit a mild tingling, dull or electrical sensation and this sensation suggests that the energy is moving in the body and that the treatment will be effective.

  • How long does the treatment take?

Usually an hour.  Each consultation includes an interview, 20-30 minutes of acupuncture and generally some massage to finish up.

  • How long will it take for me to see results?

Most people start to feel better after the third treatment and generally have significant improvements after six weeks.

  • Do I need to bring anything?  What do I need to wear?

We recommend you wear comfortable loose clothing to your consultations.  It is sometimes necessary to undress to your underwear for some consultations.  Bring any x-rays or test results, any medications and supplements you are taking and any referral letters or documents from other practitioners.

  • How will I feel after my treatment?  Will I be able to go to work or exercise afterwards?

You may feel quite relaxed and tired after the treatment.  Some people feel slightly foggy or light headed for a short time after a treatment.  We recommend that you drink plenty of water and eat after a treatment and try to take it easy.  You will be able to return to work or exercise, but we do recommend scheduling a short break between your treatment and other activities.

  • I'm afraid of needles, can you still help?

It is quite common to see patients who have a phobia of needles.  Often this phobia is associated with their experience of needles they have had for immunisations and blood tests.  The needles we use for acupuncture are extremely fine, much finer than needles used for other purposes and usually are fine enough that you won't feel them going in.  If you are afraid of needles and anxious about the treatment, please discuss these issues with your practitioner.  Your practitioner will discuss options for your treatment.  If you decide to go ahead with having acupuncture, it is important to remember that we will only do what you are comfortable with.  If you want us to remove the needles or only use a few points, we are happy to do this.
